In 2 weeks, it'll be Christmas Eve...

Where did the time go? And how did things get extra busy? It's sad that we're 2 weeks from one of my favorite holiday's of all time, but I'm already looking forward to 2013.

Let's see, here are a few highlights that happened over the last few weeks.

Vols finally hired a few football coach. No, it wasn't Gruden, it was Butch Jones, from Cincinnati. All I knew was, he was one of the teams that Dooley actually beat in 2011. Oh joy! But after watching his press conference, I was sold. Offering the WR's coaching spot to Tee Martin didn't hurt either. Now we all play the waiting game to see if he accepts.

99.9% of the time I have a football gripe, I text one of my old friends. And 99.9% of the time I don't like his responses. Today was no different, he's already 2 for 2 on our dead end hires, but come on...it was Kiffin and Dooley, for goodness sakes. He's concerned the offense Coach Jones wants to run, the no-huddle/spread/explosive type will not work in the SEC. I can't say that I disagree with him. We score too quickly, our defense will be gasping for breath. And after the season our defense had, they don't need another one.

For once I'd like to think my buddy will be wrong. I want to believe we actually have a coach who will build a system around the available talent. But on a brighter note, he's actually going to pull for the Vols. I mean, it is his alma mater too. The jerk.

Football aside, I only have 2 more weeks of work before I get a week long vacation for Christmas. I feel like a kid again!

After that, I finally get to spend my actual birthday in Vegas, with my grandparents. I cherish every chance I get to spend with them.

Once March rolls around, it will be time to head to Tampa for a quick weekend concert. Now, I just need to figure out how to occupy my time in April, May and June. Any suggestions?

Spider 2 Y Banana

Yes, my beloved Tennessee Volunteers are looking for their third head football coach since we said 'hasta la vista' to Coach Fulmer in 2008.

The last five years on Rocky Top have been rocky, to say the least. I'm going to pretend that 2009 season with He Who Shall Not Be Named at the helm was a bad dream.

Since he slithered out into the night, chasing his 'dream job', the Vols had to fill the headset one more time. I remember that winter day in early 2010 when the Vols hired Derek Dooley, from Louisiana Tech. I had no idea who he was and spent most of the day on Google and wiki to see what in the world he had to offer.

Here's what he had to offer, stability. I thankful for a few things Dooley was able to achieve in his three short years in Knoxville. He embraced tradition. Say what you will, but I love those orange pants. He created the Vol For Life program. He used big words in his interviews. He walked into a jumbled mess of a program. He tried to turn us around.

Sadly, that is where he failed. He was able to get a few sure fire athletes to campus, but for one reason or another, couldn't get them to play 60 minutes of football and get the all important W's. And we all know what counts in college football, especially SEC college football. Just win, baby.

On paper, this was the year I believed the Vols would compete for the SEC Championship. We finally had a healthy, semi-deep roster and a schedule that looked to favor us. I fulled believed we would be undefeated going into the Third Saturday of October. I thought Alabama would be our toughest challenge.

Well, this is what happens when you look at the would through orange colored glasses, you get your heart ripped out and stomped on, multiple times. We started the season 2-0, then came those nasty Gators. We were finally ranked and ESPN brought College Game Day to campus. That should have been my first clue. The ESPN kiss of death.

Let me tell you, that week leading up to the Florida game was one of the best weeks to live in Knoxville, in recent memory. The city was covered in extra orange, everyone was in a better mood and we all had hope. Then the game happened. Neyland Stadium was overflowing and loud, we had waited so long for a game like this...then we got in our own way and the wheels fell off....fast.

What I saw in that game was everything I needed to know. We were never going to win with Derek Dooley at the helm. And after that, the L's started to pile on. We had the best offense we've had in years, but oh my gosh, our defense was bad. I mean real bad. And I love a good solid, smash mouth defense. We had a Swiss Cheese defense. I was not a fan of the Sal Sunseri hire, for Defensive Coordinator. For those that know me, you know who I wanted on the sidelines. Period.

But, I digress, the Derek Dooley era came to a swift end after the Vanderbilt meltdown on November 17, 2012. Athletic Director, Dave Hart made it official on Sunday, November 18th. Now, my Vols were officially on the coaching hunt. Names have been flying around for weeks and for the last month, I've let myself get stuck on one, Jon Gruden. Yes, he has UT ties, all be it slim ties, but ties none the less. And he loves Peyton Manning more than I love Peyton Manning and I named my dog after Peyton Manning. I'm hoping Peyton is calling him every week to breakdown plays.

We have Major Money Men who are tired of losing. I fully believe they will, if they haven't already, open their wallets and make it rain on the new head coach. Will they pay enough for Gruden to walk out of the Monday Night Football booth and onto the sidelines at Neyland?

Guess we'll have to wait and see. But with anything else, Gruden hasn't coached a game since 2008, I think. And coaching at the collegiate level is nothing like coaching in the NFL. Can he connect to and coach these kids? Will he stay long term and build a new dynasty or bolt for the next attractive NFL job?

I don't know the answer to this and aside from Gruden, I don't know who else I'd want to see with the headset.

I just had to get all of that out of my system. Now I'm going to try and step back from the ledge and the Gruden Train before it derails and kills me.

I just have one request to whom ever accepts the challenge of the Vols head coaching job, "just win, baby!"

Why to people steal?

That's one think I've never understood, why people steal. I'm not talking about the gum you may have pocked as a child when a parent wasn't looking. I'm talking about breaking into a stranger's (or maybe even someone you know) and willfully taking things that don't belong to you.

This may seem like a random thought, but I found out a co-worker's home was robbed yesterday...at 3:00 PM in the afternoon. Do you know what I was doing at 3:00 PM, I was working, as I'm sure most/all of you were too.

The whole situation makes me sick. My co-worker is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. He'd do anything for you. Not only that, he has a family and one of his children is afraid to go back in the house. They think the bad guys are coming back. And I hear is dog is traumatized. I don't know of the robbers did anything to the dog, but that's 2 things I can't stand. People that hurt children and animals.

Overall, I'm glad no one was injured, but how can you restore the piece of mind for your family? I hope they catch these yahoo's, but sadly, they probably won't. And what are they going to do with the stuff they took? Repackage it as Christmas gifts or try to sell it? They didn't get anything too "fancy". An iPad, a laptop, a 5+ year old TV, etc.

Here's the lesson of the day, don't steal from my friends. Losers steal. I was raised to pay for the things I want. I want a lot of stuff, so that's why I WORK, to buy it. If you try to steal from me, I will cut you.

That is all.

No Shoes Nation

It's that time of year...the time when Kenny Chesney announces his summer tour dates. He did something a little different this year. He went on air to discuss and reveal the dates live on his No Shoes Radio, online station. Do you have any idea how hard it was for me to work, listen to the Erik Ainge Show on my radio and NSR streaming from my phone? What made it worse was, he revealed the dates 1 by one and I that was my busiest day in the office all week!

But let's cut to the chase. He's playing 17 (I think) stadium shows. He's suppose to announce the arena dates later. Since he played Nashville last year, I knew he wouldn't come back this. And I've given up all hope of him coming back to Neyland, well, maybe for his last show, he'd come home.

OK, so you're all wondering which shows I'm going to. Well, for the 3rd straight year, he's going to open and Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. Mom and I will be heading down, provided I can get tickets. This is like our thing...Mom and I hitting up Kenny shows across the country. If he plays Vegas, guess who's going to be there too?

There will be shows in Columbia, SC and Atlanta, GA, but I'm not sure if Eric Church will open those. I know the Zac Brown Band will play those and the one in Minneapolis. I like ZBB, but I saw them 3 times in 2011. I'm good for a minute.

If you noticed I used the word "shows" earlier. Yes, I'm that crazy person that loves live concerts, especially Kenny concerts. I'm eyeballing the show at Fed Ex Field in Landover, MD. But, I'm getting my plans together to hit up the show at Sports Authority Field in Denver, CO.

Why Denver? Aside from the obvious, Peyton Manning might show up, one of my childhood friends lives out there. I haven't seen him in ages and I was suppose to visit a few years ago, but plans had to change. I shot him a text as soon as I heard "Denver, CO" and he replied within minutes. I told me he'd buy my concert ticket and my first 2 beers if I came out to the show.

I almost snorted at my desk, but it was a sweet offer. I told him he didn't have to pick up my concert ticket, but I would take him up on the beer offer. I never pass up free beer!

The Rockies are start a home stand that weekend, so I think we're going to try and hit up a game too. I've always wanted to visit Denver, so this is the perfect opportunity to explore a new city and catch up with an old friend. I'm also excited to meet his fiance. I hear they're planning to tie the knot at a resort in Playa del Carmen in 2014. Would be nice to meet a few more people before I show up and proceed to drink my weight in booze.

I (early) voted...

Yes, it's election day. A day where everyone is a talking head. I'm not going on a political rant, because I hate those. I just wanted to say that I was disappointed I didn't get one of those "I Voted" stickers when I cast my early vote last week.

It may be silly and I know it takes funds out of the budget, but I always wear the sticker if I vote early or early in the day on election day. Why? Because it actually reminds some people to get off their duff and VOTE.

Kind of silly, but I still wish I got one.

Smokey X

While there is still unrest on Rocky Top, regarding our current and future coaching options, I am confident there will be at least one bright spot on the field next season.

Smokey X will make his debut at the 2013 Orange and White Game. I think the Vols have the cutest mascot  ever. I may be a little partial, but come on, how can you not love this face?

Smokey X

We had a good run with Smokey IX (2004-2013). I hope he'll enjoy this retirement and continue to live the lifestyle of a pampered pooch. He's earned it!

Thunder from Down Under

Yes, I went to Vegas again, but this time, I got to spend a day with 2 of my childhood friends. I moved away from Hawaii when I was 8, but I'd go home to visit almost every summer till college. It's hard to imagine friendships that last though moves, marriage and children.

When I was in Hawaii, I had lunch with Sheila. She likes to go to Vegas almost as much as I do. As we were talking, we realized we'd be in Vegas at the same time for a few days. Before long, our friend Nani found out we'd both be in Vegas and she didn't want to be left out. Since she's married, with 3 children, traveling is a little more difficult for her. But by gosh, she packed up the whole family and met us in the desert.

I have to thank her wonderful husband, Casey, for looking out for us. They ended up staying at the MGM Grand and Casey arranged for a limo to take us to lunch, booked massages (I'd never had one before), booked another limo to take us down to the Craft Beer Fest and even got us surprise tickets for a "surprise". That might have been the funniest part of the evening. We were instructed to pick up an envelope from the bell desk before we left for the Beer Fest. We were also told not to open it till we got downtown.

All we knew, there were tickets inside that envelope. We didn't think much about it, just figured they'd be for a show or something. So we get downtown and open the envelope once we get to the Golden Nugget. Nani's face was priceless as she read the words, "What's Thunder from Down Under?", she asked. Sheila & I could not stop laughing. Once we told her what it was she started laughing too.

Now let me go back a minute. If you knew Casey, you'd know why this was extra funny.

But here's the question you all want answered...how was Thunder from Down Under...

I don't even know how to process this question. Casey got us VIP tickets which means our table was in the front row, in the middle of the stage. I wasn't sure I wanted sweaty, naked Australian's dancing that close to me. The people watching was to die for!!

We went to the 11PM show and I was pretty tired since I flew in that morning and we had a jam packed day, but we ended up having a lot of fun. Now, the dancing wasn't as good as Channing Tatum in "Magic Mike", but the eye candy was pretty sweet.

Sorry, no photos as we were instructed to turn off our cell phones and keep cameras tucked away.

Did I mention it was Bama weekend. They closed the show with a "Sweet Home Alabama" routine. The place went nuts and I stuck my fingers in my ears and put my head on the table. I love my Vols too much to listen to that junk.

The Wild Eagle

Since I'm a pretty stubborn person, I refused to let a little rain keep my buddy and I from Dollywood on Monday. I wanted to take a spin or three on the new roller coaster, the Wild Eagle! We asked some of our co-workers if they wanted to join us, but none wanted to shell out the $62.00 or brave the rain/cold. The Boss Man gave us each $30.00 gift cards since we were suppose to go "shopping", but Dollywood didn't take AMEX, but the adventure was well worth the price of admission.

Brad and I hit every major ride and rode several multiple time to get the most bang for our buck! For the record, I can't do rides that go backward or spin in circles too much. How I convinced him to get me on the Dizzy Disk, I'll never know, but I almost threw up my BBQ all over him, and he would have deserved it!

But back to the Wild Eagle, I love roller coasters where your feet dangle. I guess that's because the super power I've always wanted is, to fly. I'm not a big fan of coasters that take you up, then drop you straight down. Thank goodness the Eagle didn't do that. After the initial drop and turn, I went from terrified, to having the time of my life.

I never buy those photos after you ride the rides, but Brad's expressions were too good to pass up! I promise he was having a good time, but just not when the camera snapped.

Here's a bit more info about the Wild Eagle:

"America's first wing coaster, the first ride of its kind in the U.S., is perched 21 stories above Dollywood and takes riders on a unique experience that feels as if they are actually soaring high above the Smoky Mountains.
Instead of having the train on the track, Wild Eagle seats riders on either side so there is nothing but air above and below the rider!"

First time the camera snapped, on the first run

I figured out I wasn't going to die, Brad...still not sure

Still having fun on Ride #2...Brad is still concerned

Yup, still laughing...Brad, I think he wants to get off

Color Me Rad

Knoxville hosted its first Color Me Rad 5K, yesterday. It benefited East Tennessee Children's Hospital. Unlike other races, this one was not timed and after each K, you were pelted with colored power or sprayed with paint. Our fresh white shirts, courtesy of Health First Fitness didn't stay white for long.

I have my shirt currently soaking in vinegar to help preserve the color. We'll see how it goes. I was worried the color would take a long time to wash off my body. I was kind of right. The hot pink color that was embedded in my scalp came out with a few extra scrubs, but the blue under my arm is still there, after repeated scrubs. I hope it washes out tonight.

Overall, it was a fun event...I'd do it again next year. Maybe I could actually train and run the whole thing...maybe.

the before

the after

I want a baby goat!

I think I have lost my marbles...

Anyone that knows me, knows that I hate to run. Heck, I don't even like to sweat! But I signed up for the 5K, Susan G. Komen, Race for the Cure at the end of this month. Why? I have no idea!

After work, 3 of my co-workers and I went for a jog on what we think is the course. All I know is we started over near the convention center, ended up back in the bowels of the Old City and found our way back to Worlds Fair Park.

I didn't die, which is a plus and I actually ran a lot farther than I thought I could without stopping to walk. As of this very minute I feel good. We'll see how my body feels tomorrow morning. Why I decided to run 5K tonight, when I have another 5K race in the morning...I have no idea. Good thing about tomorrow's Color Me Rad. It's not a timed event and there are suppose to be like 5K people, so I think there will be a lot of walking.

5 day work weeks...

Since May, I've probably only worked a handful of 5 day work weeks. When I do, it totally messes with my mind. I woke up today thinking it was Friday. Big time boo-boo on my part. Then I was sad for the rest of the day because I have to do it all over again tomorrow.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy working, but this is vacation month and my buddy & I decided to hit up Dollywood on Monday. And here's the best part, we're getting paid to have fun!

Next week, we're having a Team Leader retreat in Pigeon Forge. I normally dread them because this is a very busy time for my department and all I can think about is how much work I'm going to have when I get back to the office. And a majority of the topics we cover don't have much to do with my specific job. But it is a very nice break away from the desk. We have more food and drink than we need and we even get goodie bags. I got a Colts hoodie a few years ago (thanks for leaving Peyton) and a $50 Target gift card last year. When they asked what my favorite retail store was this year, I said Coach. Wonder if I'll actually get a gift card?

We normally leave the office by 10AM on Monday and you have a choice of 2 activities. You can golf or go shopping. Yes, I've been paid to shop before and they normally give you some shopping money and let you expense you lunch. Two years ago my buddy and I drove up to Gatlinburg and ate at the Pancake Pantry.

This year we thought we'd all get to go to Dollywood for the day, since we can't check into the cabins till after 5PM. But that was not to be, so, my buddy and I made the executive decision to hit up Dollywood instead. Before you start making fun of Dollywood, I hear they've added some pretty cool coasters over the past few years. But what do I know, I haven't been there since the late 80s or early 90s.

I'm just hoping I don't throw up my funnel cake!

It's been over 10 years...

Since I've seen two of my oldest friends. Hard to believe, right? But one of them still lives in Hawaii and the other is married with a family in Oregon, it's very difficult to align our schedules.

But by the grace of the Parrothead himself, Jimmy Buffett. The three of us will be in Vegas at the same time. Yes, I bought tickets to see Jimmy Buffett at the MGM Grand. When I was in Hawaii over the summer, my  friend Sheila & I started talking about the rest of our travel plans over lunch. Come to find out, I fly in to Vegas on the tail end of her trip.

Then, we told our friend Nani and next thing we know, she and her family decide to fly in. I can't believe I haven't seen any of her children yet. I'm such a bad friend.

Did I mention there's also a Beer Festival at the Golden Nugget? I have a good feeling Vegas will never be the same.

Unrest on Rocky Top

If it's football season, Vol Nation is probably frustrated. Yes, the Vols are 3-1 and many fans would have been OK with that stat before the season started. At this point, I'm thankful the Vols have 3 wins. Did they lay down against Florida, in the second half? In my opinion, yes. Did they almost blow it against Akron? Yes. Is this Tennessee football? Yes and no.

As an alum and fan, the current suckiness of the Tennessee football program has me very upset. When I was in school, the Vols were winning championships and played their hearts out for 60 minutes. I haven't seen the Vols play as a "team" and for the T on their helmet in ages.

Do I blame Coach Dooley? Not 100%. The program was headed down a black hole long before he showed up. 3 coaches in 3 years from 2008-2010 didn't help, but something has to give. I like Coach Dooley. He seems like a nice guy and I dig his respect for the program. But, let's face it, nice guys don't win games and the guy hasn't proven he can handle the pressure and the spotlight in the SEC.

Tennessee should be a top tier program. We should have coaches beating down our door. What's happened? What's changed? I'm sick of losing and seeing a bunch of miva's (male divas) just "go through the motions" on the field. I get it, the athletes are part of the problem. We're not recruiting the same kind of kids we were back in the day. Those guys are going to Alabama, LSU and even gasp, South Carolina.

We lost to Kentucky last year. KENTUCKY, for crying out loud. They had a WR playing QB, who had only practiced under center for a like a week. That is not acceptable!!

I love this town, but I really love this town during football season when the Vols are playing well. You can just feel the excitement in the air. Orange as far as the eye can see. It was a rare sight to see Neyland Stadium not filled to the brim. I remember we had 107K for the 1998 Florida game. Granted, with the renovations, we aren't close to 100K, but I don't think they even announced last night's crowd against Akron. My guess was somewhere around 50K. Actual butt's in seats, not tickets sold.

I'll finish with this...I'm not saying the Vols need a new head coach right now. A coaching change would put the program back another 3-5 years. I need the coach to change. What I mean is, manage those emotions on the sidelines, motivate the players, get them on the same page, TEACH.

But, this is a 2 way street. The players have to listen and want to improve. So guess what boys, time to put your big boy pants on and play like a man. You chose to wear the orange and white, so wear it with pride. Some of you will be lucky enough to play in the NFL. Look at all of the former Vols still in the NFL. How did they get there? They worked their asses off.

Go Vols, beat Georgia!

Sawg Sells

In case you don't live in the South or don't pay attention to college football, my beloved Tennessee Vols take on their arch rival, the Florida Gators.

It's "Gator Hater" week, like it is every year, leading up to the Florida game. Both teams have issues to correct if they want to win on Saturday. I'm concerned about the Vols kicking game and our, at times, Swiss Cheese defense and secondary. I'm sure the Gators have a few kinks to work out too.

So, why do I start hearing rumors about Tennessee changing their uniforms for the game? If you were anywhere near me for the 2009 game against South Carolina, you heard my displeasure about the black jerseys.

I know it's 2012 and swag sells, but I don't give a flip about swag. I want our team focused so we can finally skin the Gators. If this black helmet makes you play harder, so be it. But ESPN's College GameDay will broadcast from Circle Park, we've got a handful of recruits in town and we're kicking at 6PM EST on ESPN. The city and the stadium need to be filled with orange.

Can you tell I'm a fan of tradition?

To swag or not to swag?

It's about time...

For college football...I know I say this every year, but this felt like the longest off season ever!

It's no secret, there's been turmoil on Rocky Top for the past few years. I've tried not to pay attention to a lot of talk, it stresses me out. And no matter what is being said, nothing else matters except what happens between the white lines.

What happened between the white lines in the Georgia Dome last night was something I haven't seen in ages. A.) a Vols football team actually playing like a team and B.) a Vols victory in the bloody in the Dome.

Here are a few of my thoughts on the game:

Our secondary worries me a little, but maybe that was just opening game nerves

With solid snaps, I feel like our kicking game may be a bit more stable

I saw fire and desire to improve. When someone missed a tackle or botched a play, they were showed emotion. They were pissed they didn't make the play. And they showed improvement. Teams of the past would have shrugged their shoulders and just trotted off the field, like "no big deal".

Still need to wrap up and tackle. It's such a basic concept, I have no idea how we still can't do it!

Oh, Cordarrelle Patterson is the real deal...kid's a beast and going to be fun to watch for at least a season.

That being said, if the Vols continue to improve and learn from their mistakes...they can be a very special team.

Go Vols!!

Where did the summer go?

I feel like I ask myself this very question every year. Back in October, I booked a trip to Hawaii. I had been looking forward to it all winter & spring. Then June came and went. I wish my trip home could have lasted a month instead of a short week.

But aside from that trip, I feel like I've had something going on every weekend since early May. I don't even remember my schedule filling up so fast, but it did. I can't tell you what else I did, because it feels like I was just getting off the plane from Hawaii, yesterday.

So, since this was my first "free" Saturday, I actually had time to get a long overdue oil change and do some power shopping, but most importantly, I finally had time to rest and just "be".

It seems like we're all going our different directions and the world around us is moving 1000 miles an hour, so it was nice to take a step back and just breathe.

Every little thing...is gonna be alright....right?

I don't like to blog about work, but sometimes it helps when I can vent. We are approaching our busiest time of the year. From about October to March, I feel like I don't know which end is up.

I currently manage a team of seven. My buddy manages another seven. Well, I lost one team member to law school earlier this month. Another team member will be transferring to another department on August 1st and I just found out today another team member may be moving out of state within the next month.

My buddy is losing two of his team members to transfers and another is interviewing for another position sometime in the near future.

And did I mention they wanted us to each have up to eight or nine person teams, each?! We'd have no problem with that, but there aren't any applicants!!

This is what freaks me out. A lot of the qualified people in other departments would have to take a cut in not only rank, but pay as well. And with the lower level, their opportunity for raises would be much smaller.

Here's hoping I don't lose my mind by October 1st.

But no matter what, I fully believe, every little thing...is going to be alright.

The Mayan's better be wrong...

One of my friend's decided not to cut his hair till the Vols lost a game. When I asked him about this, he told me he didn't plan on cutting his hair till 2013. I may or may not have snorted when he revealed this bit of information, but hey, you should think you can win every game, right?

While at breakfast this morning, I said I think the Vols could go undefeated till the Bama game. Then I went out of a limb and called for an undefeated season, a la 1998. My other buddy about choked on his eggs when I made that statement. He told me that if the Vols went undefeated (he's a Vols fan too) that he'll know the Mayan's were right and the world will end.

Which of course, would put the end of the world BEFORE the National Championship Game. Which would be on par for the Vols. Run the table and don't even have a chance to play for it all.

But all kidding aside, I just wonder how long my Fuzzy Bear friend can let his hair grow. I'm pretty sure he's on the verge of breaking office dress code already. But, he did tell me that if we're undefeated going into the 3rd weekend in October, I can braid cornrows into his hair. That would be most awesome!

Oh and I decided to finally spend a birthday in Vegas. Another reason the Mayan's better be wrong. Can you believe that I've never spent my actual birthday in Vegas? Shocking, just shocking.

USA...USA...USA...

Once every four years, I get extra patriotic. I love the Olympics, but the Summer Games are my favorite. The aquatic events have always been at the top of my list. Guess it was because I grew up around water.

This year, the US Olympic Swim Team is training at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. Doesn't sound like much, but that just happens to be the aquatic center on the campus of my alma mater, the University of Tennessee.

They opened practice up to the public today. From 8:00AM - 9:00AM, the first 1200 could watch inside the AC. For those that couldn't get in, the outdoor pool was open from 8:00 - 10:00AM.

My friend Sharon had expressed interest in going, so I decided to meet her there. Neither of us were sure how many people would actually show up, we decided to try and meet on campus around 7:00 - 7:15AM. Knowing how long it takes me to actually "wake-up". I set my alarm for 5AM. I actually hear it around 5:15 and was up and moving before 6. I stopped at Starbucks before I hit campus, 6:30AM-ish.

By the time I got to the top of Volunteer Blvd, the line to get in was huge! Similar to what you would see outside of Best Buy, in preparation for Black Friday. Sharon got there a little after 7 and we hustled over to the tail end of the line. I wasn't sure if we'd make it inside, but after standing in the rain for over an hour, I need to see some Olympians!!

Once the line started moving, people were cutting in left and right. Sucks for those of us that had been waiting and even worse for all of the kids and swim clubs that were behind us. As we got closer to the door, I felt like a little kid waiting to see Santa.

The door was in sight, and they held a group of us at the top of the steps. I'm pretty sure they said "1170" were already inside. They counted us off and I think Sharon and I were #1185 & #1186.

It's not every day an Olympic team trains in your backyard. We made it in and started snapping photos. Since they didn't have their names on their caps, it was hard to tell, from a distance, who was who. The local media found Davis Tarwater and talked to him for a few minutes. I'm pretty sure Ryan Lochte ran past him from the warm up pool and jumped in the main one. Everyone in the stands stated cheering, but not a "Michael Phelps" type cheer.

After about 20 minutes, we left and headed to the outdoor pool. It was still raining, but there were people lined up all around. We climbed up to the balcony of the original AC and saw Brenden Hansen getting his work out in.

I made it to my office a little after 9AM and when I went to lunch at Pete's one of my co-workers made a motion through the window. She asked if I saw Michael Phelps. I thought she meant while I was on campus, but it turns out, Phelps and his family were walking down Union Ave. I don't pay attention to the people walking down the street. But if I had seen him, good chance I would have chased him down the street. He's an 8x Gold Medalist for crying out loud!!

All in all, it was a pretty hilarious day.

Now, it's go Gold or go home...Go Team USA!!

Where did the time go?

How is half of 2012 already over? The last 6 months have been filled with some pretty amazing things. Here's hoping the next 6 months bring even more craziness.

How to tell if he's a keeper...

Yes, I have screening questions before I even consider dating a guy....his interest in and allegiance to a specific college football team is very important in the decision making process.

I'm kidding...kind of...

But love does make us do extraordinary things. One of my friends is married to an Alabama fan. Another is married to a Gator. I'm not sure if those guys realize how lucky they are to have Tennessee Volunteer girls.

Brothers of the Sun, Nashville

Another summer, another Kenny Chesney show. This time, I didn't have to leave the state, I just had to hop on 40 and head west to Nashville. The last 2 times Kenny played Nashville, it was over the 4th of July holiday. I can't imagine how hot it would have been this year. It was hot enough last weekend.

I missed Jake Owen and Grace Potter, but I didn't really plan on listening to them anyway. I was waiting for Tim McGraw and Kenny. I'd seen Tim once before, here in Knoxville, but his set on Saturday was nothing like what I had seen before. For starters, he was dressing in white, with his trademark black hat, but no facial hair. He looked good, real good. Not only that, he sounded amazing. Kenny was going to have a tough act to follow.

But just like always, Kenny delivered. I'd have to say, this was probably the best show I've seen, excluding the one in Vegas. It looked like he was just having fun on stage. I think the 50,000 others at LP Field would agree.

If you haven't been to a show this year and they're near you...go see them!

Dale Jr wins at Michigan (6/17/12)

Holy Victory Lane, Batman!

After 4 years of hoping, waiting and praying...the #88 finally found its way back to Victory Lane. Yes, it's Father's Day and he was in a black car. Funny how things work out in the NASCAR world.

Wouldn't mind carrying The Dark Night Rises paint scheme all season if it gives me the same results!

The Nation was restless, no doubt, but tonight...Jr Nation gets to celebrate. Have no fear, I will not be calling in to work tomorrow.

Backstreet Boys - Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)

But I was singing this at my desk all day. I don't remember the video being this cheesy. Oh wait, it was the last 1990's...of course it was.

Kenny Chesney - Don't Blink

This song has been in my head all week. Could have done without the Montgomery Bell Academy clip, though.

Don't forget...

...to tell something you love them. Be it a family member, friend, significant other, pet (who I consider a family member), etc...since tomorrow is not promised to any of us.

We all make excuses, I'm the worst at this. I push a lot of things off till "tomorrow". But I'd hate to think I'd never get a chance to say what I felt. A friend of mine lost his father this morning. It had been a long illness, so it was kind of expected (as much as it could be) and it just got me thinking about the people in my own life.

Life really is too short to take the little things for granted. Remember, it doesn't hurt to say "I love you". It'll hurt more if you don't have the opportunity to say it again.

There is no bond greater than family...

...and the older I get, the more I believe this to be true. Being and only child and moving away from the rest of my family when I was only 8 made it a little more difficult to stay in contact with my cousins and such. But now, I realize how important that bond is and I'm thankful we still have the chance to reconnect. I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world!

Keeping it local

Tourism is the biggest money maker on the Islands, no doubt. It's a good thing I enjoy supporting the local economy when I travel! You're welcome Honolulu...

About that last post...

I used an iPad to type that travel post. I can't figure out how to not make it a giant Simoneaux type paragraph. Will fix it once I get to my PC.

After six long years...I finally made it back...

...to the Islands and it took me long enough to get here! It's kind of funny now, but at the time, I wanted to rip my hair out. I was suppose to fly out of Knoxville at 12:30PM on May 31st and land in Hawaii by 7:45PM. Around 10:30AM, all heck broke loose, flight wise. I got an alert saying my MEM to LAX was going to be delayed due to mechanical issues. While this would cause me to miss my connection over water, this turned out to be my saving grace.

En route to Jessica's, I called Delta to see if they could re-route me. They could and did. My new flight was scheduled to leave 30 minutes earlier and would send me to ATL and SFO, getting me to Hawaii about 30 minutes later. No big deadly, right? Jessica was kind enough to print my updated boarding pass before she took me to the airport, but I would still have to check in at the gate for a seat assignment. Shocker, an ATL bound flight was delayed, so this made check-in a little more annoying than usual, but once I got my new boarding passes, I noticed they put me in First Class.

Of course that was too good to be true. My journey West was about to turn into my biggest nightmare! We were held on the ground due to traffic/weather in ATL. This was going to make my connection tight. Just as we were about to take off, I noticed vehicles coming toward our plane. Yup, the pilot shut off the engine because someone on our flight needed medical attention. I as well as the entire plane started to get frustrated. Not because of the passenger that needed help, but at the lack of communication between the pilot and other passengers. Not to mention the lack of urgency with the EMTs. Since we're still sitting on the ground, I call Delta to see if they can get me on another flight since there's no way I'm making the SFO connection now.

The agent I spoke to was very helpful and tried to get me on an American Air flight out of ATL. There were no openings, but she could get me on a flight from ATL to LAX to OGG (Maui) to HNL. This would get me in and hour later than my original time, but I didn't care, I just wanted out of the airport. So they finally get the person off the plane and instead of taking off, we turn around and head back to the gate. I'm about to lose my sh*t at this point. We are not given a reason as to the turn around. They allow us to deplane as we've been sitting there for what seemed like hours. I was not a fan of this at first, as another flight to ATL left as we were standing around. By the time I got to the desk, I was at my breaking point. I was losing vacation time. I asked the TYS gate agent to please get me the heck out of town. I knew I'd have to spend the night on the West Coast. I wasn't happy at all, but there was nothing else I could do. My final itinerary had me going from ATL to LAX. Spending the night there and flying out first thing in the morning. I still had a First Class upgrade, Delta would put me up in a hotel and give me meal vouchers.

But the best thing about being stuck in LA, my cousin Patti was going to rescue me and take me to In-N-Out Burger once I landed. We finally took off for ATL and I made it to my connecting gate with seven minutes to spare. I didn't even have time to go to the bathroom at the airport. This is when my First Class upgrade came in handy, I got right on the plane, didn't have to fight for overhead space and could go to the bathroom while everyone else boarded. You better believe I took advantage of my status. I became friends with my old friend, Jack Daniels! He helped to ease my travel headaches.

I was fortunate to have nice travel companions as well. There was an older guy next to me for the first half of the flight. After dinner, he moved back to sit with the rest of his family and his son took his spot. This guy was probably the nicest guy I've ever met. He was just a baby though, only 27. He and his family were heading to a wedding in Santa Monica. After traveling for about a million hours, we finally landed in LA. I headed to the Delta counter to pick up my hotel and travel vouchers and called my cousin. She met me at the Westin LAX and off we went, in search of food! I've never been so happy to have family all over the country!

The flip side...

Found out today that one of my co-workers will be leaving the company at the end of the month to pursue another avenue. I'm happy for him and I knew he needed a change. But the thing that stuck me was the lack of vacation time he'll have at his new job.

Yes, yes...I know the whole point is to "work", but I guess I've just been spoiled the past few years. I didn't get the full details, but my buddy will only have 5 PTO days, but all the bank holidays off. There's something about earning an extra PTO day for each month you don't have an unexcused absence.

I don't know what I would do if my PTO days were cut. My 1st year I had 10 days. For my 2nd-4th years I had 24, but could "carry over" 5 so I had 29 days to play with. Year 5-current, I got 29+5, so for the past 2 years, I've had 34 PTO days in the bank.

Now that sounds like a lot, but that's to cover everything from sick/personal days, to holidays, to vacation. My PTO just reset in May, after the Memorial Day holiday, I'll have 33 days to burn, but my Hawaii trip will eat another 7 days. This kind of freaks me out, but I have to keep reminding myself that I took similar time off in 2010 when I went to Key West and Vegas in the same week. Now that was a stressful packing situation. Speaking of which....I need to put the finishing touches on the current packing mess.

It's not just about cookouts and the day off...

...it's about remembering and honoring the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice to give us the freedoms we enjoy today. I have seen family members and friends head overseas. Some have returned covered by an American flag.

I challenge each and every one of you to look outside of yourselves and really think about how you're able to enjoy this time with family and friends. While you're grilling out or just hanging out, remember those that will  never be able to do that again. And while many of us are feeling the early heat of summer, what about the men and women camped out in a desert, half way around the world. That 90 degree heat in May doesn't seem so bad now, does it?

Did you know...

...that May is National Hamburger Month? So, as a PSA...go eat a hamburger.

When is National Bacon Month? I'd celebrate that one daily!!

Sometimes the truth hurts...

In the work place, I'm a big believer in earning your stripes and being promoted for based on job performance and qualifications. I don't think anyone should be promoted just because they think they deserve it or because of who you know. If that were the case, who wouldn't think they "deserve" a promotion or raise.

But since I like to live in reality, I know sometimes moving on up the ladder can sometimes depend more on who you know and less on merit. I personally don't think it's fair, but life's not fair. Stuff happens.

There is an open position that would be a promotion for several people, friend, included. However, some of the "qualifications", in my opinion, are stronger in some of the people in my department. That doesn't mean I don't think my friend "deserves" the promotion, I simply think there are others who may be better suited for  it.

Apparently this upset said friend and in turn this makes me a bad friend because I wouldn't go to bat for them. Uh, maybe I missed something, but I have nothing to do with the hiring process. I tried to clarify the difference, in my mind, between "deserving" something and being "qualified". That didn't go over very well.

If I'm missing something, please enlighten me.

Can't wait to fly until the map turns blue...then green again

You know that feeling you had as a kid of Christmas Eve or the last week of school? You know, wanting something so bad you fear that day will never arrive? Well, that's how I feel now. I've been looking forward to heading back to Hawaii since 2006. In a little over a week, I'll finally have the time to hop on a plane and see my family & friends that I've missed for so long.

It seems everyone has all these grand ideas about what to do and what to see in Hawaii. Truth be told, it's always a very low key visit for me. I don't care about the latest restaurant or bar opening. I just want to see the people I don't get to see on a regular basis.

I see lots of food in my future. And yes, the dinner menu for the night we arrive has changed twice. But I'm OK with the latest change. I have a routine, the first thing I do when I land in Hawaii is find the nearest Zippy's and order fried chicken, french fries and a fruit punch. I can't help it, I've always loved fried chicken, even when I lived in Hawaii.

Fruit punch, that's something else I can't get enough of. Don't get my wrong, I love my sweet tea, but there's just something about an ice cold fruit punch that always brings me home.

Never know who you're going to see in Vegas...

I thought last weeks Vegas trip was going to  be just like all the other ones...a weekend to visit with my grandparents, eat, shop and gamble. Well, it was all that and just a touch more.

Mom and I landed in Vegas before lunch on Thursday, May 3rd. We broke from routine and headed to Serendipity 3 instead of In-N-Out Burger. After a quick lunch, we did what we haven't done in years, roamed the Strip. It wasn't as crowded as I expected. It was Fight Weekend after all, but that was just fine with me. Stupid people get on my nerves, especially while I'm on vacation.

After walking down to City Center, then up to the Palazzo, so I could find my $750 cupake (which I never saw), we headed back to the Forum Shops to pick up a red velvet cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory for my grandparents. There are so many weird turns in that place, I can't even tell you were we started, but we somehow passed by a shop called "Field of Dreams". Mom & I both stopped and I nearly peed my pants. All I saw was a banner than said "Joe Montana, May 4th".

Let me stop here and say that Joe Montana is my all-time favorite QB. Now I love my Peyton Manning like no other, but I grew up and 49ers fan and there was nothing like watching Montana lead them down the field and into the endzone. He's always been on my 'Bucket List' of athletes to meet, but come on...what are the chances we'd actually be in the same place at the same time.

Thank goodness for Vegas! Mom and I went in and I grabbed a mini Notre Dame helmet. The sales guy told me I didn't want that because the total price would be like $399 or something like that. So I was ready to walk out of the store, but this other dude ran over and said, "the 8x10's are a better choice". I found the one I wanted, it showed all 4 of his Super Bowl rings. And I already had the perfect frame at home.

Mom and I went back the next day and it was a very controlled chaos. He was just as nice as could be and didn't even flinch when I jumped on the table to get a photo with him. After all these years, he's still a class act.

Fins Up, Vegas style...

I couldn't resist...I picked up tickets to see Jimmy Buffett at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas this October. Fins Up, baby!!

Fins...

Ok, I may have a small addiction to a little city in the desert. For the past 12 years, I've gone to Vegas at least two, sometimes three times a year.

I'm heading back there this week, but until a few days ago, didn't have another trip in the works. Then I saw the tweet I had been waiting for...Jimmy Buffett to play 2 Vegas shows. There are only 2 artists I'd fly to Vegas to see. And he's one of them. I missed out on it last year, I'm not going to miss it again.

I'm 60/40 committed to pulling the trigger. Concert tickets go on sale on May 1st. I can't even begin to think what kind of Parrotheads would come out for this show!

Stay tuned to see if the travels will continue...Fins Up!!

You've come a long way, baby...

Kudos to the United States Naval Academy's Todd Green, on being named the 2011-2012 Independent Video Coordinator of the Year by the Collegiate Sports Video Association. Any time an award is voted on by your peers, says a lot about your performance.

Keep up the good work!

To ink or not to ink...

...that is the question...

If I ever broke down and let a tattoo gun come anywhere close to my body, I'd have to think a portion of this Oscar Wilde quote I would be involved.

I would love to have devil horns on "saint" and a tilted halo over "sinner"...things to ponder...

Memo to the guys...

So, I was out and about this afternoon at the Dogwood Arts Festival in Market Square and stopped for some lunch at the Savory and Sweet food truck. As I was waiting for my food, I happened to look down and see the dude behind me in flip flops. Oh my gosh, his toes were awful!

Let me pause for a moment and state. I strongly dislike feet. Mainly other people's nasty feet. I hate being seen in open toed shoes without polish on my toe nails. I'd get more professional pedicures, but it annoys me when other people touch my feet like that.

But guys, come on...it's getting warm out...you're going to be wearing flip flops...please, please...get your toes did!!

Just another Sunday on the golf course...

There's something about Final Round Sunday in Augusta. All of these grown men, hitting a little white ball all for one goal, to win a green jacket. But I don't think there's anything better than a Masters win...once you win, you're guaranteed a stop for the rest of your life. How many other sports allow that? This is part of what makes the Masters so special.

This year, a friend of mine was lucky enough to go for a second time with his dad and brother. I asked him to bring me a Tervis mug if they were still available. I got a tweet from his mom on Easter Sunday letting me know my mug was coming back to Knoxville.

How cool is that? How many people get to see the Masters in person, twice?! I plan on taking this mug to work. We are suppose to use lids. Silly rule, but I actually have a hot pink lid that will fit the mug.

Masters swag

The hot pink lid works for multiple reasons. Not only is it my favorite color, but the 2012 Masters Champion, Bubba Waston uses a hot pink PING driver. Before Bubba won, the PING driver was not available to the general public. But now, due to the popularity, they are available and a portion of the proceeds will benefit cancer research. I think that's the best part. If I golfed, I'd buy one.

Do you have online influence?

Well, according to Klout, I do. Klout measures your online influence from all connected social media networks. It's actually a pretty neat website. You can give Klout points to people you feel are influential about a specific topic. Most of my Klout points have come because my friends feel I know a thing or two about football. Imagine that!

This all adds up to a "Klout Score". Scores range from 1 to 100. My current score is 54. This puts me in the "Specialist" category. Per the Klout wesbite:

You may not be a celebrity, but within your area of expertise your opinion is second to none. Your content is likely focused around a specific topic or industry with a focused, highly-engaged audience.

I picked up the following perks over the past few weeks. Dial for Men speed foam body wash and a few Simple skincare products. I gave the body wash away, but I think I'm going to like the Simple products. I do have sensitive skin, so I'm excited to give it a go.

Just another day at Bristol Motor Speedway

It's that time of year again, time for a little NASCAR racing in Thunder Valley. My Mom and I have season tickets to Bristol Motor Speedway and we even named our Beagle after the track. But over the last few years, the racing has not been the same. I know the point of racing is not to wreck everyone on the track, but there was something special about the beating and banging that went on during a Bristol race.

We skipped last year's Spring race to attend a Kenny Chesney concert in Tampa. I've often wondered when the races would start messing up my other travel plans. So, I guess my love for Kenny is greater than my love for Dale Earnhardt Jr.

But this year, we decided to hit up the Spring race. And boy and I glad we did...I finally got the chance to see Junior in the flesh! My mom & step-dad met him a few years ago at a National Guard event in Nashville. My step-dad's actually met Jr twice.

Both my mom & step-dad are retired from the National Guard, but still work at the armory in Nashville, on the state side of things. My step-brother still works for the Guard as well.  Needless to say when Jr moved to HMS a few years ago and the National Guard became a co-primary sponsor, things got interesting. Jr's the perfect face for the National Guard. I

Back to me and Junior...we got a call early Sunday morning....about 7:30AM or so. One of the guys my parents use to work with had extra VIP passes to meet Junior. We had no idea what else was going on, we just had to be at the track by 9:00AM. It was raining and we had just passed the Greenville sign when we had to hammer down and get up there. Good thing race traffic did not exist. We parked and ran (yes, I RAN) to Hospitality Village. Next thing I knew, we had lanyards around our necks and we were walking toward the National Guard hauler. Mom and I were handed die cast race cars and Jr was going to sign them  at 10:30AM.

Uh, what? I thought it was going to be one of those talking appearances, you know, where the driver just stands on the stage and just talks to the crowd. Yeah, this is when I thought I was going to pass out and the fact that I didn't have on any make-up really hit home.

It was still raining, I was hot from running and I didn't even have a tan to cover my lack of made up face. What a way for me to finally see Jr face to face...sans make-up. Great!

Long story short, about 20-25 of us were ushered in the hauler once Jr arrived. He was very polite and posed for photos even though we told not to ask for them, as they were pressed for time. Not wanting to screw things up, I had my car signed wished him well, thanked him and hurried down the steps. Then I got yelled at because I went to fast, so I got called back to take a photo with him. I wanted to crawl under the hauler and hide, but he thought it was funny. After everyone when through one of the guys asked my mom if she got a photo with her camera. She said no, so they ordered be back in there. You'd think I'd be giddy, but I was mortified. I didn't want him to be late to the drivers meeting, but again, he was very gracious and humble. He even "ma'am-ed" me. Now that's the only think I'm going to remember, Dale Earnhardt Jr "ma'am-ed" me!!

NASCAR's most popular driver

Skulls, skulls and more skulls...

Who doesn't love a good skull every now and then. Did you know that June 4th is Skull Appreciation Day? I found that out last year. I'll be in Hawaii this year, but I already have an outfit planned to celebrate. My mom is making me a blue skull sundress. I wanted pink, but they didn't have that fabric in stock.

Back to the point, my friend, who I'll call iLRokery finally brought in the extra Knoxville postcards I asked for. I asked him to sign the back for one of my friends. He decided to one up the signed copy he originally gave me. In his words, this skull was 1000x better than mine. The Jerk was right, so I took my copy and a few from my co-workers to make up do more.

I thought he would complain. I may have abused our friendship in the past and may or may not have asked him to draw things on demand, but he's always come though for me.

I put little Post-Its on the cards to give him a little direction, but the rest was all him. He keeps saying that he doesn't want to top the one prior, but he keeps raising the bar. He's also told my team that he's going to dumb mine down. He better not, If he knew what was good for him, he'd make mine the best of the rest -- haha...

I may be biased because he's a friend, but I really think he's got some talent. The t-shirts he ordered with the same Knoxville skyline are almost sold out. I've asked him to draw a unicorn with a rainbow for a t-shirt, but the idea keeps getting shot down. I told him I want a hot pink shirt of some sort before he packs it up.

I don't know if he's updated his website, but there are several pretty cool pieces up that don't involve skulls: iLRokery.

Mountain Adventures

Our Smoky Mountain adventures consisted of outdoor adventures on Saturday. Thankfully, we had beautiful weather. After a quick breakfast in the cabin, hats off to Chef's Allyson & Jessica, we headed to Laurel Falls for a quick hike. Yes, I really hiked. Good thing it wasn't too hot, so I didn't get all sweaty.

I have to be honest, all I could think about was zip lining. I've wanted to do that forever! I got a little worried when our first zip lining choice was already full on Friday, but I'm glad things worked out the way they did. We ended up booking with Foxfire Mountain and I'm already thinking about my return visit.

The people there were so friendly and down to earth. I loved our guides, although I can only remember Tim's name. Maybe because he was the one hooking us up to the line, I had to trust him. But "College Dude" who gave all the instructions was awesome and "Trainee" was just as cool.

Things did not start off too well for me, as I fell before we even to the first practice line. I fell on one of those little bridge thingys. I still have no idea how that happened, but what ever, someone had to do something stupid, so it might as well have been me.

Once I got hooked up to the lines, I didn't want to stop. I tried to "Superman", but it didn't work out to well, you end up on your back and have to get all twisted back in the right spot. I kept worrying that I wouldn't get turned around fast enough and slam myself into a tree.

Foxfire is home to the longest, 1500 feet and highest, 600 foot line in East Tennessee. Trainee wouldn't let me to tricks on that one, but told me I could on the last line. Just to be on the safe side, Tim had me tuck into a ball and give me a shove...so I wouldn't get stuck on the line. By the time we got to the last line, it was hard to believe almost 2 hours had passed. Jessica took off first and tried the "helicopter". I wanted to try something different, so Tim suggested I hang upside down. Sold!

And now...time for the picture show....

I dropped my water bottle in mountain water
